WOW BEACH GUIDE · THE WIND DECIDES

Mallorca's best beaches – and which one is right today.

On Mallorca, the wind decides where the sea is calm. When it blows from the north, the south is smooth as a pool. When it swings south, the day belongs to the north. We've personally rated 12 beaches – and show you live where it's good today.

Which beach for which wind?

The cheat sheet. Winds are named after the direction they come from – and on Mallorca, each one has its own name.

FAQ: beach weather on Mallorca

Why does the wind decide which beach is nice on Mallorca?

Mallorca has coastline facing every direction. When the wind blows onshore into a bay, it brings waves, seagrass and sometimes jellyfish. On the other side of the island, the sea lies in the lee. Check the wind direction in the morning and you'll almost always find a calm beach.

Which beaches are calm with the Tramuntana (north wind)?

Usually sheltered: Cala Mondragó, Cala Pi, Cala Varques, Caló des Moro, Es Trenc, Platja de Formentor, Platja des Caragol, Portals Vells.

Which beaches are calm with the Llevant (east wind)?

Usually sheltered: Cala Deià, Cala Pi, Es Trenc, Portals Vells.

Which beaches are calm with the Migjorn (south wind)?

Usually sheltered: Cala Deià, Cala Sant Vicenç, Platja de Muro, Torrent de Pareis / Sa Calobra.

Which beaches are calm with the Ponent (west wind)?

Usually sheltered: Cala Mondragó, Cala Pi, Cala Sant Vicenç, Cala Varques, Caló des Moro, Platja de Formentor, Platja de Muro.

Which beach on Mallorca is almost always sheltered?

Cala Pi in the south. The narrow, fjord-like cove has a bend in it, so the water is almost always calm. Only heavy swell from the south brings waves in.

And after the beach?

Back to your own finca. Pool, peace, cold drinks. And if you fancy a different beach tomorrow: one call on the red phone is all it takes.

Cala Pi – Small, turquoise, and quite well hidden.

Cala Pi is not a bay you just happen to stumble upon by chance. From the small village of Cala Pi, you descend a long flight of stairs between the cliffs – and then, suddenly, there it is: a narrow sandy bay with turquoise water and a true feeling of Mallorca.
