THE WIND DECIDES

When is Platja des Caragol at its best?

On Mallorca, the wind decides which beach has calm water. Platja des Caragol opens to the south and southwest.

Checking where the wind's coming from today …

calm rather choppy side-on

Rule of thumb based on how the cove faces. On site, flags and lifeguards have the final word.

„Mallorca's southernmost beach. For a moment I wondered whether I could see Africa from here. No.“

What to expect at Platja des Caragol

From the Cap de ses Salines lighthouse, a stony coastal path takes you to the beach in 20 to 40 minutes. The reward: around 500 metres of white sand, shallow water and dunes that stretch far inland.

There's no bar, no toilets, no sun loungers. The area is protected – and that's exactly what makes it so appealing.

The beach opens to the south. When the Tramuntana or Gregal blows, it's a good choice; with a southerly wind, seagrass can wash up.
