No crowds at the beach, no queues at the café, no fighting for a parking space. Instead, clear air, empty mountain roads, a fireplace in the evening, and lunch in the sun. Mallorca in winter is not a fallback option. It’s a pretty good idea for anyone who wants to have the island all to themselves for once.
Anyone who only knows the summer only knows half the island. Between December and February, Mallorca becomes quieter, greener, and surprisingly lively, just in a different way. Here you will find out what to expect, what you can experience, and what you should look out for.
What is the weather like in Mallorca in winter?
Mild, but not summer. On the coast, daily highs in December, January, and February are usually around 14 to 16 degrees Celsius. At night, it gets significantly cooler, with temperatures around 5 to 8 degrees. On sunny, windless days, however, the midday sun often feels warmer than the thermometer suggests.
- Sea: about 14 to 16 degrees. A quick dip for the hardy, a beautiful sight for everyone else.
- Rain: There are rainy days, but usually just short showers rather than continuous rain.
- Mountains: In the Serra de Tramuntana, it is colder and more changeable. At higher altitudes, frost and snow are even possible.
In short: Pack a sweater and a jacket. But bring your sunglasses too.
What you can experience in Mallorca in winter
Hiking and cycling
For many, the best time of the year. The temperatures are ideal for long tours, the paths are empty, and the landscape is green after the autumn rains. Many cyclists use the winter and spring for their training on the island. You can find suitable houses at Finca Mallorca for cyclists.
Sant Antoni: Fire, devils, and animal blessings
On January 16th and 17th, Mallorca celebrates Sant Antoni, the patron saint of animals. On the evening before, large bonfires, the foguerons, burn in the village squares. People grill, sing, and watch the dimonis, Mallorca’s fire devils, who dance through the streets with pyrotechnics. On the 17th, animals are blessed in front of the churches, from sheep to the family dog. The festivals in Sa Pobla, Manacor, and Artà are particularly well-known. The municipalities usually publish the exact program only shortly beforehand.
Sant Sebastià in Palma
Shortly after, Palma celebrates its city patron Sant Sebastià on January 20th. On the evening before, there are concerts and fires all over the city.
Almond blossom
From the end of January, the almond trees begin to bloom, first in sheltered locations in the interior of the island. The weather determines exactly when. You can read more about the season in our article on the best time to travel to Mallorca.
Markets, villages, Palma
The weekly markets also take place in winter, and you will share them primarily with locals. Which market is on which day can be found in Weekly markets in Mallorca. Palma with its cathedral, old town, and museums works in any weather anyway.
What you should look out for in winter
- Not everything is open. In typical seaside resorts, many hotels and beach restaurants take a winter break. In Palma and the villages in the interior, however, there is more going on. When in doubt, ask beforehand.
- The Sóller train is on hiatus. The historic train from Palma to Sóller takes a winter break every year for maintenance work. In 2025/26, it did not run from the end of November to the beginning of February. Check the current timetables before you plan your excursion.
- Short days. In December, it gets dark early. Plan hikes so that you are back before sunset.
- Be mobile. Many fincas are located away from bus routes. A rental car makes many things easier. Tips for this can be found in Rental cars in Mallorca.
The right finca for the winter
In summer, the pool counts. In winter, the heating counts. A Mallorcan stone house without proper heating can be surprisingly chilly in January. Therefore, pay close attention to this when making your selection. A few examples from our offer:
- Finca Floriana near Porto Colom: Central heating, fireplace, and a heatable saltwater pool. For up to 12 guests, with sea views from the property.
- Holiday home Grandina near Ariany: Central heating, fireplaces, and a wood-burning stove. For up to 16 guests in a quiet, secluded location.
- Finca Rotana near Porto Cristo: Central heating and fireplace on 800 m² of living space. After all, Mallorca works in winter too.
You can find all winter-proof houses at Finca Mallorca in winter. And if you prefer to arrive at a warm house with a full fridge: our WOW CONCIERGE will take care of that.
