Outside it’s 30 degrees, sunny, and bustling with beach life. Inside: silence, stalactites, and an underground lake. And then, suddenly, classical music begins, played by musicians gliding across the water in boats. The Caves of Drach in Porto Cristo are one of the few Mallorca experiences that truly no one forgets.

The Coves del Drac (Spanish: Cuevas del Drach) are located on the outskirts of Porto Cristo on the east coast. They are among the island's most well-known destinations, and rightfully so. To ensure you enjoy your visit rather than standing in line, here is everything you need to know.

What to expect in the Caves of Drach

The cave system consists of four interconnected caves and is about 2.4 kilometers long in total. The visitor path leads for just over a kilometer through halls filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The caves were explored in 1896 by the French speleologist Édouard-Alfred Martel, commissioned by Archduke Ludwig Salvator.

The highlight is named after Martel: Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in Europe, over 100 meters long. Here, you take your seat in an amphitheater-like setting. The lights go out, then illuminated boats with musicians appear on the water. A short classical concert, in the heart of the mountain. Afterward, you can take a boat ride across the lake to the exit yourself.

The tour lasts about an hour. Inside the cave, the temperature is pleasantly constant year-round at around 20 degrees, with high humidity.

Opening hours, tickets, and prices

The caves are visited only during fixed entry times. According to several sources, the general schedule is:

  • Summer season (approx. mid-March to end of October): Entry at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, and 17:00
  • Winter season (November to approx. mid-March): Entry at 10:30, 12:00, 14:00, and 15:30
  • Closed: December 25 and January 1

Adults pay just under 20 euros, children significantly less, and babies are free. Tickets are slightly cheaper online than at the ticket office, and you can choose your own time slot. Prices and times change occasionally: check the current information on the official Cuevas del Drach website before your visit.

How to have a successful visit

  • Arrive early or late. In summer, midday hours are the busiest. The first tour in the morning or the last ones in the afternoon are more relaxed.
  • Book online. During high season, popular times sell out quickly.
  • Sturdy shoes. The path has many steps and can be damp. Flip-flops are not a good idea here.
  • Use a carrier instead of a stroller. You won't get far with a stroller due to the many stairs.
  • Be punctual. Plan some extra time for parking and entry. The tours start at fixed times.

Visiting the Caves of Drach with children?

Yes, absolutely. For children, the whole experience is an adventure with a built-in fairy tale: dragons, darkness, a lake inside a mountain, and boats with lights. Very young children sometimes find the darkness during the concert a bit scary. A stuffed animal to hold onto helps. Those who suffer from claustrophobia, however, should think carefully before visiting.

And afterwards? Porto Cristo itself

Many people head straight back to the bus after the cave. What a pity. Porto Cristo has a lovely natural harbor, a small town beach, and a promenade where you can enjoy a coffee. We share our personal favorite spots in the Porto Cristo insider tips.

Stay where others take a day trip

For most Mallorca vacationers, the Caves of Drach are a single program point with a long journey. For you, it can be a spontaneous morning activity. The Finca Rotana is located about 3.5 kilometers from Porto Cristo. Up to 16 guests, 36,000 m² of property, a large chlorine-free pool, and sea views. Morning at the cave, afternoon at the pool, evening on the terrace. That’s what a well-planned day looks like.
