It is officially called the "Impuesto sobre estancias turísticas," but on Mallorca, everyone simply calls it the Ecotasa. And, by the time check-in rolls around, everyone asks themselves: What actually is it—and how much does it cost?
The Ecotasa is a tourist tax that all holidaymakers on the Balearic Islands pay—in hotels as well as in holiday homes. The money flows into a fund for sustainable tourism, environmental protection, and nature conservation on the islands. Here are the most important facts for your finca holiday.
How much is the Ecotasa for a holiday home?
The amount depends on the type of accommodation and the season. For holiday homes and holiday apartments, it is a few euros per person per night during the high season (May 1 to October 31), and significantly lower in the low season (November 1 to April 30). Plus 10% VAT.
The Balearic Islands adjust these rates from time to time. We will therefore provide you with the exact, current amount for your house when booking—transparently and with no surprises at check-in.
Who has to pay the Ecotasa?
- Adults and teenagers aged 16 and over pay the Ecotasa.
- Children and teenagers under 16 are exempt.
- From the 9th night onwards in the same accommodation, the amount is halved.
A calculation example
Four adults and two children under 16 stay in a finca for seven nights in July. Only the four adults are subject to the tax: 4 people × 7 nights = 28 taxable nights. For a twelve-night stay, nights 9 to 12 would only be charged at half price. Families with children therefore pay noticeably less than groups of adults.
When and how is it paid?
The Ecotasa is collected by the accommodation provider and forwarded to the Balearic authorities. For holiday homes, this is the owner or manager, and it is usually paid at check-in or check-out. Important: The Ecotasa is generally not included in the rental price of a finca and is charged separately.
What the Ecotasa means for your holiday budget
Compared to the total price of a finca, the Ecotasa is a minor item—though for groups and longer stays, a quick look at the invoice is worthwhile.
