Pollença is one of those places where you only intended to stop for a quick coffee. And then, suddenly, it's evening.
In the northeast of Mallorca, between the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana and the Bay of Pollença, lies an old town with narrow streets, honey-colored stone, and a main square where you can spend an astonishing amount of time. Add to that two coastal towns, a cape that is a must-see, and mountains that put you in a pretty good mood. Here is our Pollença day – and why the area is also worth it for a finca.
Morning: Plaça Major and the Sunday market
The day begins at the Plaça Major, the main square with its church, cafés, and plane trees. On Sunday mornings, there is a market here: fruit, vegetables, cheese, olives, handicrafts, and a great many people pretending they are just looking. Our tip: arrive early, order an ensaïmada with your coffee, and get your shopping done for the evening at the finca right away.
Before noon: The stairs to the Calvari
Directly from the old town, a cypress-lined staircase with 365 steps leads up to the Calvari, the Calvary hill with a small chapel. It sounds like a workout, but it’s done in about 15 minutes – and at the top, you get a view over the rooftops of Pollença to the sea. One step for each day of the year. So, if you make it to the top, you have officially finished a whole year.
Lunchtime: Off to the sea
Pollença itself is located inland, but the sea is close. Two directions are recommended:
- Port de Pollença: The long, sheltered bay with shallow water and a beach promenade is ideal for families and water sports. Plus, there is a harbor, restaurants, and sunsets over the water in the evening.
- Cala Sant Vicenç: A small, quiet coastal village with several pretty bays, clear water, and the mountains right at its back. Perfect for snorkeling and for those who prefer things less busy.
Afternoon: Cap de Formentor
If you still have energy, drive the winding road out onto the Formentor peninsula to the lighthouse at the cape. Along the way is the Mirador Es Colomer viewpoint, offering one of the most spectacular views on the island. In the high season, access to the cape is sometimes restricted for private cars – check the current rules beforehand or head out early.
Evening: Back to the old town – or don't leave at all
In the evening, the Plaça Major turns back into the village's living room. Tapas, a glass of wine, and the question of whether you really have to go back yet. Those staying in the old town don't have to. Those with a finca in the valley look forward to the pool, the grill, and the starry sky.
When is Pollença at its best?
In the spring and autumn, when it is warm enough for the beach and the pool, but cool enough for the Calvary hill. In summer, the classic Festival de Pollença, with concerts in the cloister of Sant Domingo, is worth it. And at the beginning of August, the town celebrates the historical defense against a pirate attack with a big festival – loud, colorful, and quite impressive.
Staying near Pollença: Old town or valley?
That is exactly what is beautiful about this area: You can have both.
- In the middle of the old town: Casa Llum is located about 200 meters from the main square – with its own pool, roof terrace, and room for up to eight guests. The car can take a vacation here.
- In the Colonya Valley: Finca Es Lledoner is less than three kilometers from Pollença between mountains and olive groves – for up to twelve guests, with a pool and nearly seven hectares of land.
- Near Cala Sant Vicenç: Finca Palma Papa offers a pool, a games room with billiards, and a view of the Tramuntana, just under three kilometers from the bays.
