Mallorca and wine – for many, that sounds like buckets of sangria. Yet the island has a wine culture that you take a little more seriously with every sip.
Wine has been cultivated on Mallorca since Roman times. Today there are dozens of small wineries, many of them family-run, with wines made from grape varieties that are hardly known outside the island.
The two wine-growing regions
D.O. Binissalem
In the heart of the island, between the Serra de Tramuntana and the plains. The region includes towns such as Binissalem, Santa Maria del Camí, Consell, Sencelles, and Santa Eugènia. The wines are powerful and Mediterranean – the flagship variety is the red Manto Negro.
D.O. Pla i Llevant
In the east and the center of the island, around Felanitx, Manacor, Petra, Porreres, and Algaida. This is where fresher, more modern wines are often produced, also from international grape varieties.
The grape varieties you should try
- Manto Negro: the typical red island grape – fruity, soft, Mediterranean.
- Callet: a red grape variety with a refined, elegant character.
- Prensal Blanc (Moll): the native white wine grape – fresh and light.
Fincas in the heart of wine country
If you love wine, it's best to stay where it grows: Our holiday homes Cecilio, Cayo, and Caridad are located in Consell, and the Finca Son Lluny is near Sencelles – both in the Binissalem region. More on this: Fincas in the center of the island.
The wine tasting comes to you
No one needs to drive: Through our concierge, we organize wine tastings and winemaking courses – with winemakers who are really good at what they do.
